Murphy’s Laws of Wine… I recently read an article in Food & Wine from December of 2012. Their “wine-tasting room” columnist gave a few tips on identifying and purchasing the best bargain wines. As we are always on the lookout for a bargain- we thought we’d pass along these tricks of the trade that we use when purchasing wine and that you can benefit from utilizing also! Keep these tips in mind as you read this newsletter and also on your next wine shopping excursion.

  1. Some inexpensive wines are popular. Some inexpensive wines are good. However, not all inexpensive popular wines are good and not all inexpensive good wines are popular.
  2. If a good store is pushing an obscure wine, especially over the big names that have real marketing muscle and dollars behind them, that wine is probably worth trying!
  3. Don’t assume that because a wine is widely available, it wasn’t made with care.
  4. Wine prices are as arbitrary as wine preferences.

Dan’s Pick Dan has ventured out of old world wine from France to new world wine from Argentina for his pick this week! His new world pick is Santa Julia + Cabernet from Argentina. This is a 2011 vintage that sells for $9.99 a bottle. Dan says it is a great value Cab that drinks well above its value price point! Besides being a bargain, you are also doing your part to save the environment if you purchase this bottle, as its vineyard is 100% sustainable.
Feature Item This week’s feature item is a Xarel-Lo from Marque Gelida. Xarel-Lo is an extremely rare white varietal from Spain. It is sometimes used as a blending grape for Cava (Spain’s sparkling wine) but is seldom seen as a single varietal, as it is very prone to frost damage. This wine is described as crisp and bright with stone fruit & citrus flavors. It has aromas of floral and lime zest with substantial acidity on the finish. It pairs best with seafood and sushi. At $12.99 a bottle, there is nothing stopping you from being adventurous and trying this unique wine!
As you already know, and is evident by this newsletter, we pride ourselves on being the place for wine bargains. That being said, we are an equal opportunity wine shop- we do not discriminate based on age, country of origin, popularity, worth or color of wine. Regardless of what we or the experts say, the best part about wine is that everyone tastes it differently- you can never be wrong when it comes to wine. Buy what you like, drink what you like and do it all with us!
Cheers!
