News 🗞

Yep, we just can't keep still. After saying we'd be resting for a couple of weeks, we decided to do something else this Saturday. We'll be roasting up some Pig Wings and tossing them in a Peach BBQ sauce. Pig Wings are from the lower shank and trimmed up to create a tender piece of meat on the bone, just a little larger than a chicken wing. The pork pairs beautifully with a sweet BBQ and a nice glass of Zinfandel, so come try it out and let us know what you think. On the store front, in addition to a few new wines that we tasted this week, we brought back a few old favorites AND did a big restock of Spain and Portugal, so wines that have been missing for weeks or months are now back in stock. For all you Portugal drinkers --- you know who you are --- now's the time to pay us a visit before they're all out the door again.

Wine Feature ⭐️

Believe it or not, it's another Australian feature this week... but I have a good reason. This is one we won't see again for a while, and we only have six bottles in house: it's Thorn-Clarke 2019 Shotfire Reserve Barossa Shiraz. The winemaker, Sam Thorn, was sitting on a lot of leftover juice from their bottling of Ron Thorn Shiraz (a $125 bottle) and William Randall Shiraz (a $60 bottle). He decided to blend them, and Shotfire was born. "Growers in Barossa for six generations, the Thorn-Clarke family farms close to 600 acres of vines, providing the fruit for this sleek, black-fruited shiraz. It’s silky- smooth, with the concentration and density of flavor that takes the tannins toward iron and sage. A deep, dark wine with pleasure to spare, this begins to show floral scents of roses, then detailed flavors of plums and strawberries after a day open to air." This bottle is sharp and hefty as well, both looking and drinking like more than its incredible price of $24.99. Come grab one while you can... I just might set one aside for myself.

Wine Pick 🥂

We haven't been able to get our hands on this wine for a few weeks, but it's finally back in stock: Honig 2023 Sauvignon Blanc. This $22.99 domestic Sauv Blanc hails from Northern California's Napa and Lake Counties. The vineyard is family-owned for three generations, sustainably farmed, and solar-powered, so they're up to a lot of good stuff out there. "Honeysuckle and stone fruit aromas and flavors flow into a perfectly round mid-palate, followed by bright citrus reminiscent of lime and ruby grapefruit. A layered and delicious Sauvignon Blanc in the classic Honig style, easily enjoyed on its own or with lighter seasonal fare." A few of you have told us that this is your favorite wine, so if you're a Sauv Blanc drinker, it's time to give this bottle a go. It'll be perfect for your patio sipping next week.

Food Feature 🐠

Another fish special this week because I got a great deal on some Fresh Mahi-Mahi. I actually think that emoji up there might be a Mahi... Mahi-Mahi can grow to be up to 7 feet long. The fillet I got in isn't quite that size, thank goodness. This is another fish that is incredibly versatile --- it's famous for its mild and delicate flavor --- but shines when cooked simply. Pan fry it, air fry it, bake it, or even grill it in this 60-degree weather we've been having. Top it with some fresh lemon, garlic, herbs, salt and pepper, and done. Serve with anything -- vegetables, pilaf, potatoes, you name it. You won't be disappointed. It's also fantastic for Fish Tacos with some fruit salsa and fresh cabbage. The options are endless.

Oyster Feature 🦪

This week's oyster is White Stone, "the Chesapeake's finest oyster," from Chesapeake Bay, obviously. I know, we usually stick to PEI oysters around here, but these have some pretty good press, so we thought we'd give them a shot. According to them, "The Chesapeake Bay has been the home of the world's most desirable oysters dating all the way back to the 1600s. These shelled delights of the Virginia coast have a reputation second to none for their size, flavor, and overall freshness." They are supposed to be an approachable, crisp oyster with notes of sweet mushroom and a salty miso finish. Check them out and see if their description is right.

Final Thoughts 💬

Monday of this week was exactly one month until Spring, can you believe it? Seeing as how it's going to be in the 60s again next week, I can. Knock on wood, but Spring just might be coming sooner rather than later... maybe that groundhog was right after all. We're going to soon start shifting our focus to warmer weather wines; the first Rosé of the year already came in last week. And before you ask, no, our patio is not coming out quite yet...

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
