News 🗞

We may have missed National Oyster Day on August 5, but we're doing our best to make up for it this weekend: Wine Merchant's Oyster Day, this Saturday, all day while the oysters last. We need to start sharpening our oyster knives and doing some hand exercises because we ordered over 1000... and who knows, we may panic order more. We have three varieties: Pink Moons from PEI, Salten Rocks from Cape Cod, and all the way from the west coast, Capitals from Washington. They are all different shapes but around the same size, and very different in flavor. You should really try all three and do a compare and contrast. You can get them on the half shell, single variety or a sampler platter, or baked as our newly invented Croyster... an oyster topped with crab and buttery bread crumbs seasoned up with lemon, herbs, garlic, shallots, etc. We'll of course have beverages to pair with each. This is why we keep our food menu slim... so we can do events like this. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy planning them for you.

Wine Feature ⭐️

I really love this one... Louis Latour 2020 Marsannay Rouge. There's just something special about French Pinot Noir. Louis Latour is a classic producer of Burgundian wine. It is a family-owned house that has operated independently since 1797 making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and has the largest holding of Grand Cru land in the Côte d'Or. This bottle is from the village of Marsannay, which is the Côte d'Or's northern gateway. At 100% Pinot Noir, it's earthy but still bright and lively due to the iron-rich soils of the region. The winemaker describes it as thus: "Our Marsannay 2020 has a dark and deep color with garnet hues. On the nose, it reveals notes of blackcurrant and blueberry. On the palate, it is ample and fresh with aromas of blackcurrant and licorice. It has a beautiful length on the finish." Wines from Burgundy usually have huge price tags, so this is one is a bargain at $36.99.

Wine Pick 🥂

The pick this week is King Estate Winery 2023 Artisan Series Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley, Oregon. I'm going to be honest, I picked this one because of the label... but also in part due to the King Estate name. They really put Willamette Valley Pinot Gris on the map. The grapes in this bottle are 100% estate-grown and biodynamic, which essentially means a really clean and natural farming method. That is what inspired the creating of the winery's Artisan Series: it is "a testament to the artistry of winemaking and to the values and principles behind it." In the bottle, you'll find aromas of apple, citrus, jasmine and ginger. On the palate, "bright acidity showcases the fruit right from the start. Vibrant flavors of pear, quince, white peach, grapefruit and lemon evolve into complexity and texture on the palate before finishing with length and balance." See what you think at $21.99 a bottle.

Food Features 🥩

Beef lovers, take notice... we're restocked! Our Steak Frites event last week went so well that I ended up using all the steak we had in house, but fret not... it's back. We have the Fresh Prime Hand-Cut Teres Major Steaks at $19.99/lb. These are the very tender, very flavorful shoulder cuts, second in flavor probably only to Filet Mignon. Speaking of... we have more of the Frozen Filet Mignon 2-packs, two 6oz steaks for just $18.99. Filet Mignon is the tip of the tenderloin and is widely regarded as the king of steaks. And finally, a new delivery from our Dry Aged Program with Buckhead Meats, Fresh Prime Dry-Aged Hand-Cut Ribeyes for $25.99/lb. I trimmed these up today, and they are absolutely beautiful. Juicy, savory, and ready for your dinner plate.

Final Thoughts 💬

Well, school is back in session this week. As a former teacher, my thoughts are with all the parents, teachers, and administrators who are back to the grind. I hope your sanity remains in tact. Please know that once those kids are out of the house, or once that bell rings at the end of the day, you can come here for some much-needed respite. The doors are always open... until 8pm, of course 😬

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
