Calendar 🗓

April 7 (Friday) - National BEER DAY!!! We’ll have special beers and beer-inspired foods to share with you on this special holiday. Mind you, this is not National Drink Beer Day, this is the day to recognize this favorite beverage and its history in our country. However, we will be encouraging consumption of this beverage on this hallowed day.

Store News 🏬

New food products are slowly coming in from our food show trip. Some new great cheeses from Spain, bacon-wrapped pork tenderloins from Wichita, Kansas, and a new Risotto One-Pot Meal to make dinner just a little bit easier. Stop in and see what we’ve got for you. We've got something new every time you come in.

Wine News🍷

We’ve been tasting a lot of tasting this week... almost too many if that's possible. However, we did come across quite a few new wines that will be coming in next week. There have been times when I’ve mentioned something similar here, and now I’m telling you that this week was a tad over the top. Either way, there have been a plethora of new wines brought in to us, and there will be quite a few entering the racks.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

Not necessarily a new wine, but it’s been quite a few years since we last had in Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos 2019 Garnacha. Priced quite friendly at $22.99, it’s a value-oriented, well-made old vine Garnacha from Spain. Winemakers notes describe this wine as, “Very intense cherry red color with tones of purple. Presents in the nose a great concentration of aromas of ripe red fruit with floral nuances. In the mouth, it is a well structured rich wine that evokes tastes of blackberry, plum and tones of leather and vanilla, with a soft and silky tannin.. We’ve very recently started tasting quite a few of these old vine Spanish Garnachas and have been very pleased and excited to bring them in. If this is a varietal that you haven’t been introduced to, this is a starting point, or if you are already a fan, stop by and pick a few up. Sunday is going to be sunshine and grilling -- a perfect time to take this bottle out for a trial run…

Dan’s Pick 🥂

My pick this week is Goose Ridge Revelation 2022 Rosé. I find this description perfect: “This Rosé is mostly Syrah along with other Rhône varieties. Pale in color, the aromas capture your attention, with notes of yellow strawberry, mineral, orange rind, watermelon, herb and rhubarb. Somewhat fuller but still brisk flavors follow. It lingers on the finish.” We have never had this bottle in before, and when we tasted it earlier this week, we wondered how that possibly could have happened. Priced at $18.99, this Washington State Rosé will soon be one of your favorites! I also stole this line from the winery: “We may be a bit biased, but we think it's pretty obvious that rosés (the wines!) are far superior to roses. Forget the flowers: get your loved one, your best friend, and most important yourself a gift they can smell AND taste!” It’s Spring, c’mon in and pick up a few because that perfect weather is coming.

Food News 🐷

I have to order our Easter hams by tomorrow, so if you would like one of these specialty hams from Smoking Goose, please call soon. That’s what I’m cooking up! These hams are quite special... brined with 3 Floyds Gin and Meyer Lemon and then glazed with Elderflower and smoked over mulberry wood. We are excited to be able to share this years specialty hams from one of our favorite producers, available as a whole ham (8-10lbs) $99.00 or as half ham (4-5lbs) $49.00. Let us know because the order goes in tomorrow at noon.

Food Feature (Lenten Specials) 🍤

We love our shrimp, and Oishi does a tremendous job with these big, beautiful crustaceans. We stumbled across a recipe that we feel would make a perfect Lenten dinner. Gambas al ajillo (pronounced GAHM-bahs ahl ah-HEE-yoh) is one of the most popular tapas in all of Spain. The Spanish take on garlic shrimp or prawns, this appetizer is a favorite in tapas bars and has a complex taste and rich garlic flavor. Requiring just 10 minutes to cook, the recipe is quick and simple to make at home, too. To make gambas al ajillo, sauté your shrimp in olive oil with lots of garlic and maybe a touch of dried red pepper, which gives the sauce a fantastic bite. Although optional, the dash of Spanish paprika and splash of brandy lends an authentic flavor. The best way to serve this Spanish favorite is with a crispy loaf of bread to dip or over a nice bowl of white rice. If you want to dress it up, use and fresh or dried herbs you want. Simple but yet elegant and delicious.

Oyster News 🦪

Acadian Pearls from PEI and White Stone from Virginia. White Stones are described as, “On the outside, this oyster has a deep cup and a thick polished shell. Inside, a plump oyster fills the shell. Never any grit, mud, or sand. Our oyster's more subtle flavors will change with the seasons, as the farm is strategically located to blend salty and sweet like only the Chesapeake can. Its firm meat makes it a very approachable oyster and its layered flavors excite even the most seasoned oyster fan.” 200 fresh Oysters for the weekend, old favorites and something new just for you!

Final Thoughts 💬

Seriously think about it... start your day off (yesterday) at 10:30 am with a $20 Cabernet followed by a $150 Cabernet to just admire the difference, followed by another six or eight wines. Somewhere around 11:30, another sales rep appears with eight more wines to taste. You’ve now had 14 to 16 wines in three hours. Even if you’re only tasting an ounce of each, that’s 16 ounces of wine, and usually it’s a bit more than that. So going into the afternoon, you have now consumed a bottle of wine, and then… you come back in today and sure enough repeat the same experience. That’s a bit more difficult than you think, but what can I say, I’m willing to take this task on and find hopefully some of the best wines on the market.

Cheers from all of us at the Wine Merchant!
