News 🗞
Prepare yourselves... I don't want hysteria in the streets of Findlay (or do I?), but this weekend it's our maybe/probably world famous Jumbo Baked Meatballs! I've thrown everything but the kitchen sink in this batch, so they're sure to be full of flavor. I made 30 of them, so hopefully that's enough, but you honestly never know. And not just that... Chocolate Chip Cannoli for dessert as well, with both a Red and White Italian Glass Pour at the bar. We'll be serving Friday night and all day Saturday while supplies last. I haven't decided yet if we will be serving anything next weekend yet... or just preparing for our Fat Tuesday celebration on March 4. We've got that all planned out, and it's going to be good. We will be open late until 8pm with quite a few food and drink specials. We'll have our annual batch of Dumbo (Dan's Gumbo), a special price on Nola Oysters, and a few new small plates to try out: Natchitoches Meat Pies, Gator on a Stick, and Hot Crab Dip. Plus Pecan Pie, Abita beers, and Frozen Hurricanes. Are you drooling yet? Just under two weeks away... which means Lent for many of you is also two weeks away. We are planning to have something for you every Friday of Lent, starting with our one and only Fish Fry of the year on March 7. After that... you'll just have to wait and see.

Wine Feature ⭐️
This week's feature comes from a fantastic small, family-owned Napa Valley winery, Trefethen. It's the Trefethen 2022 Eshcol Red Blend. In the family's words, "Eshcol rounds out the Trefethen portfolio as an introduction to our estate grown and sustainably produced wines. Crafted for those looking for Napa Valley quality in an accessible wine, Eshcol delivers an incredible value." We couldn't agree more. Priced at $24.99, this bottle is 100% from the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley and consists of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. A True Bordeaux-style blend from the heart of California's wine country. "Rich aromas of stone fruit and berry are elevated by earthy hints of eucalyptus and cedar. Light on the palate, flavors of red cherry and cassis are layered with spicy notes of cracked white pepper and spiced greens, leading to a bright, well-rounded finish." This wine is quite food-friendly... think veal, venison, mushrooms, or even a simple arugula salad. Can't go wrong.

Wine Pick 🥂
Just call me the bargain king. We snagged a great every day Chardonnay for almost half of its usual retail price. My pick is the Miller & Lux 2020 Chardonnay for the low, low price of $12.99. It's a pretty interesting story... Miller & Lux believe it or not started out as a small butchery in New York. Fast foward and they became one of the largest cattle owners in California with 1.4 million acres of land, much of which is in the fertile Central Coast and now produces wine instead of beef. And don't even think of asking me if I would choose wine over beef. It's an impossible decision. This bottle is "highlighted by hints of green apple, tropical fruit and passion fruit. This bright Chardonnay delivers lively natural acid, gentle warmth and a smooth, buttery finish." It's a great middle-of-the-road Chardonnay... not too buttery, not too fruity. A crowd pleaser. We probably won't have this again at this price, so if you're a fan of California Chardonnay, grab a few of these while you can.

Food Feature 🥩
I know I talked about these last week, but with Lent coming up, I want to make sure you have time to try them... Dry-Aged Strip Steaks, $17.99 for a 12oz cut. These steaks from Buckhead are dry aged for a full 44 days, and I can honestly say they're one of the best steaks I have ever had. I ordered two more cases of them for today because they're just that good. They came in frozen, but we have a handful thawing and ready for you to eat this weekend. And for the first five sold... a free bunch of Asparagus. There's dinner for you, ready to go.

Oyster of the Week 🦪
Malpeques from Prince Edward Island this week. These are wild oysters from the large Malpeque Bay in western PEI. Judged the "world's tastiest oyster" at the Paris Exhibition in 1900, these oysters have a long and storied history. Despite being wild, they are very clean in flavor, light-bodied, easy to eat, and the perfect balance of sweetness and brine. An oldie but a goodie.

Final Thoughts 💬
I honestly can't believe how many weather alerts we've had this year. Is this a record? After a relatively mild winter last year, it certainly feels like it. I'm sure the kids are enjoying all the delays and cancellations, but the rest of us... not so much. Especially with the lack of salt in this town. But we're here, our paths are clear, and the wine is flowing. Hope to see you, stay safe out there.
Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
