Store News 🏬

It’s a short week, and we ordered Saturday for Tuesday with two of our distributors and kind of had a somewhat normal schedule with others. Holiday weeks always take a bit of time to get caught up. We do our best to make sure we have whatever you need when you want it. If you promise to keep shopping here, we’ll keep shopping for you.

Wine News🍷

We’re beginning to look for new wines, meaning we’re going to be changing the wine list at the bar. It’s always a daunting task and something I don’t always look forward to, but somehow I think you do. We’ve notified our sales reps and for the next few weeks that we’ll be trying a whole host of new wines to pick out what will become our new wine list and quite possibly your new favorites. Stay tuned -- we’ll keep you updated.

Dan’s Feature ⭐️

This week's feature is a wine that I’ve been searching for: a chillable red that will be great outside with the grill. Lagar de Robla 2016 Mencía is just that bottle. “Mencía is similar to Pinot Noir, in that it is a delicate grape varietal and it's very sensitive to terroir and its environment. While a favorite of the sommelier crowd, Mencía offers the same elegance and freshness of Burgundy Pinot Noir at a much affordable price.” Sooooo, a poor man's Burgundy?? Similar maybe, but for sure different, “Mencía has only recently come into spotlight as a quality, potential-laden grape variety. When properly made, it offers fascinating wines across a contrasting spectrum of styles; on the one end are fruity and forward wines with supple tannins and succulent fruit. On the other end are more concentrated, powerful styles with an exotic earthiness, smooth tannins and an enviable reflection of the minerally-rich Bierzo terroir.” While pleasantly priced at $14.99, it’s a very, very worthy bottle to accompany anything off your grill this weekend!

Dan’s Pick 🥂

Vendemmia 2020 Initium Bianco from Sicily is my pick for this weekend. We brought in a few bottles of this just in time for the warmer weather. When I first had this wine, I found it to be an excellent summer white. However, when I went to search this new addition out, I simply saw that it was comprised of Sicilian while varietals, which doesn’t help me much in telling you a story… So I looked up Sicilian white varietals and found this list: Carricante, Catarratto, Grillo, Insolia, Grecanico Bianca, Malvasia, Zibibbo, and Moscato. So here’s the deal... pick up a bottle of this crisp, dry, and quaffable white, and come back and tell me what you think the varietals are. I enjoy sharing new wines/varietals with you, but usually I share with you what the varietal is… Think of Sicily, warm weather, sunny beaches, excellent seafood, great produce, anchovies covering a delicious salad, and what else could you possibly need? Hmmmm, I can only think of one thing... Initium Bianco!

Food News 🥩

The biggest news is that they’re shipping Copper River Salmon; aside from that, we’re stocked up on great Wagyu cuts! Start thinking Father's Day steaks. I’m currently planning on bringing in some Tomahawks but want to make sure I have enough. If you’re interested in a specialty cut, be sure to let us know.

Food Feature 🐟

Copper River Salmon has got to be this week’s feature! This is our first shipment of this prized seasonal catch. While a bit pricey at $29.99 a pound, it’s worthy every penny. Every year, May marks the beginning of the Copper River Salmon season. Stretching through September, this season is awaited around the world for its renowned wild King, Sockeye, and Coho salmon. These fantastic fish are the crown jewel of the salmon world. In preparation for their herculean task of swimming up the 300 mile Copper River, these salmon pack on rich energy reserves – evident in the copious supply of healthy and delicious omega-3 fatty acids stored in their bodies. Copper River Salmon are more than just salmon: they are a culture; a driving force; a source of life for an entire community. This week’s delivery will be Sockeye, fresh caught, never frozen, and I’m sure it will be the most delicious piece of Salmon you’ve ever encountered.

Oyster News 🦪

While we still have a few Oysters from last Thursday, our new Oysters for this week will be Raspberry Pointe from the PEI. We’ve had these in before, and I’m excited to have them back in the store this week. It’s always a Quixotic search finding just the right Oyster. Many of you regularly join in that search, and we’ll keep looking right along with you.

Final Thoughts 💬

Can’t believe it’s June… With the weather and the calendar, it seems as though we’re having an early summer this year. I feel like our job is to keep great foods in for the grill, summer beers that can be enjoyed, and great summer whites and reds. Sure, you can go to the grocery store and find all of these, but can you drink a beer or a glass of wine and walk the isles of fine wines or look over a case of Prime, Wagyu beef or fresh fish that no one else carries in town? I think not. Stop in, have a drink, and let’s shop for some great necessities…

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
