Farewell, old friend...

It's a tough day here at the Wine Merchant, but the show must go on.

Hours of Operation

Monday - Tuesday, 10am to 6pm

Wednesday - Saturday, 10am to 8pm

Calendar 🗓

October 25-26 (Fri-Sat) - Weekend Special: Sashimi & Ceviche!

November 1 (Friday) - Fall Art Walk, which means extended hours and a Friday Night Wine Tasting!

November 2 (Saturday) - An afternoon with Undiscovered Tuscany. Join us as we hear from Gianni about his 2025 trips to Italy, and kick off soup season with a bowl of Pappa al Pomodoro, 12pm-4pm.

November 5 (Tuesday) - The annual Alternative Dinner, 6-8pm. I know it’s election day… the last thing anyone should want to do this night is sit at home and watch the election returns, so make some plans and have a wonderful alternative to spending the night in front of the TV. This is without doubt our favorite and most creative event of the year, so give us a call. Reservations required. [SOLD OUT]

November 21 (Thursday) - Beaujolais Nouveau! French fare and flights, all day long.

November 28 (Thursday) - CLOSED for Thanksgiving.

November 29 (Friday) - BLACK FRIDAY BRUNCH. Chicken & Waffles, Bacon, and fingers crossed... a keg of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout.

December 7 (Saturday) - The annual Champagne Tasting, 6-8pm. Reservations required. [SOLD OUT]

News 🗞

Well, we had a special request for Ahi Tuna this weekend, we couldn't make it for just one table... so Sashimi and Ceviche for everybody! We have both Ahi Tuna and that delicious Monkfish from New Zealand. Probably the last time we'll be serving it this year, so come get your fill. On a more urgent note, if you would like a turkey for Thanksgiving, let us know by TOMORROW at 4pm. There was unfortunately a miscommunication with our vendor, and orders are due much earlier than we realized. These turkeys are exceptional. From Bowman and Landes in the Dayton area, they are fresh, all natural, free range, antibiotic-free, sustainably raised... basically everything you could want in a turkey. Just call and let us know the size you need (or how many people you will need to feed), and we will take care of it for you. Avoid the hassle of a store turkey from who knows where and leave it to us.

Wine Feature ⭐️

It's rare to find a quality Napa Valley Cab for under $50 these days, so of course I have to feature it... Silver Ghost Cellars 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon. This bottle is a post-off, meaning it's currently on price reduction at $47.99 and should remain so through the end of the year, so this might just be a nice holiday bottle for you to consider, especially for the car afficionados out there. Silver Ghost is named after the 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, the founder's grandfather's favorite car. His name was John Montagu of the British House of Lords, and he was an automobile pioneer in the UK, giving the first ever car ride to Edward VII. A close friend of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, his assistant was even the model for the Rolls-Royce hood ornament. Of the wine itself, "Silver Ghost is a full-bodied and richly expressive Cabernet Sauvignon crafted from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards. Deep in color with a vibrant nose of blueberries, violets and crème de cassis the palate reveals layers of lush red and blue fruits, mocha and dark spice. The luxurious texture and depth continue through the long finish." Wine Enthusiast says, "A wine that overdelivers on flavor and versatility, it's a good value for Napa Cabernet." We agree and hope you do, too.

Wine Pick 🥂

We got in three very nice wines from the small, family-owned Tunella winery in Italy last week, so my pick is the Tunella 2022 Pinot Grigio. We haven't picked up a new Pinot Grigio in a while... it's one of those grapes where it's hard to find one that stands out. We're pleased to have found one. "Fruity and fragrant nose evoking aromas of warm bread crust and intense perfume of acacia blossom and ripe tropical fruit. The palate echoes the nose and is elegant, full-bodied with moderately acidity and delicate hints of yeast. A wine with a decisive character." It's fuller bodied than other Pinot Grigios, so it's going to be great for pairing with food like ham, chicken, some lighter fall soups, etc. If you are a Pinot Grigio fan -- and even if you're not, this one might surprise you -- it's every bit worth $26.99.

Oyster Selection 🦪

This week's oysters are Moondancers from the Damariscotta River in Maine. Not sure we've had these before. They are middle of the road in size, salinity, and sweetness. "Moondancer Oysters have a distinct sweet-salty taste profile duality. According to the farmers, their oysters provide a 'briny kiss' followed by a 'sweet glow.'" These are supposed to be the gold standard of Maine oysters, and their producer does extensive scientific research to create a more sustainable product alongside environmental organizations and the University of Maine.

Final Thoughts 💬

We are sad to announce today that our favorite and most annoying customer is no longer with us. Jim Smithson, a customer of ours for pretty much our entire 18 years, was found unresponsive at home following a wellness check called in by a friend. Jim always had a story to tell, and it didn’t matter as to whether you’d heard it before because he was going to tell you again, always concluding with a distinctive laugh that announced to all that Jim was here. We here at the Wine Merchant, along with his friends, wish him well on his final journey.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant -- we raise a glass to Jim.
