Would you like some cheese with that wine?

No, we’re not complaining…We recently re-stocked our gourmet cheese cooler (located between our store checkouts) and would be happy to help you pair your wine choices with our newest selections. Here are the new items with some suggested wine pairings.

Parmigiano Reggiano- The acidity & carbonation of sparkling wines would contrast nicely with the richness of our imported Italian parm.

Maytag Blue Cheese- A sweet Riesling or Port would give a nice balance to the saltiness and cling to the creamy flavor of blue cheese.

Smoked Cheddar- Fruity reds such as Zinfandel and Merlot would contrast the smoke & strong flavors of our Apple Wood Smoked Cheddar.

Aged White Cheddar- A full-bodied wine- whether red (Cabernet or Bordeaux) or white (Pinot Gris or Grigio) would help balance the bite and strong flavors of the Black Diamond Aged White Cheddar.

Additionally, here are some simple and generally accepted rules for wine and cheese pairings:
* Wine and cheese from the same geographical regions pair well together.
* Try for contrasting OR complimentary flavors- not both
* Hard cheeses pair best with bigger tannins while creamy cheeses handle acidic wines better. (more…)

Happy Father’s Day!

Yes, Dad’s special day is this Sunday, June 16! As usual, we have you covered on the gift front. Father’s Day is the perfect time to get Dad a special bottle of wine, to enjoy with the family or by himself. We always have Dad’s favorite craft beers in 6-packs and bombers and now we also have a make-your-own mixed 6 pack so Dad can try something new without having to commit! Another idea would be to make Dad a game-time snack pack of our gourmet meats, cheeses and Mexican chocolates. Is your Dad a grill master? Come raid our Robert Rothschild rack for “grilling accessories” (sauces, spreads and rubs.) If you just can’t decide, a gift card is always a safe bet. With a gift card, Dad can treat himself to whatever he craves at the time!   (more…)

It’s Beer Season

Summer is beer season! Honestly, does a beer ever taste better than after a long day of yard work in the summer heat? We don’t think so! Besides the post-lawn-mowing brew, beer is also great with BBQ, around a camp fire and in a bucket of ice at the beach. No matter what style of beer you enjoy, summer is the best time to enjoy it! Traditionally, summer seasonals are wheat and fruit beers, but there are also many great light, crisp & refreshing brews. Just to tempt you, here are a few of our staff summer favorites-

Kristie- Sierra Nevada Summerfest
Chelsea- Two Brothers Side Kick (in a can, for its portability)
Kim- Breckenridge Summer Bright
Megan- Smuttynose Summer Weizen

Come check out these summer favorites and all of our craft beer selections!

Summer Whites

As the summer heat wave begins, many of you have commented your wine tastes are shifting from big reds meant to be enjoyed by the fireside to white varietals enjoyed on the patio. This trend is not unlike switching your winter wardrobe of sweaters and boots to the summer wardrobe of shorts and sandals. In the summer, a lot of us enjoy a crisp, chilled, refreshing and sometimes even sweet drink. To that end- we have a few suggestions of lesser known whites for you to try:

Falanghina- Tuscany’s version of Pinot Grigio- not as acidic- still refreshing, crisp citrus flavors.
Chenin Blanc- straight down the middle of the road white wine- not too sweet/not too dry!
Vinho Verde- fresh green grape- crisp- great on its own or for making your own Sangria!

Not too adventurous, Sauvignon Blanc (aka White Bordeaux) is our “go to” summer wine for its crisp citrus & grassy flavors! Whatever your taste, we have something fun to try! (more…)

It’s here!
Orin Swift’s latest Locations wine, “I” has arrived! “I” is David Phinney’s latest red blend from Italy. Like he has done for all of his Locations wines- Phinney scoured the chosen country for the best grapes from the best locales and made a crowd pleasing, easy drinking blend. “I” is advertised as a blend of Negroamoro, Nero d’Avola, Barbera and native varietals of Puglia. It is a deep scarlet color with aromas of dried lavender and toasted oak. It is bursting with flavors of ripe dark fruit, a hint of spice box and just the right amount of acidity. This wine has been barrel aged for 10 months giving it velvety soft tannins. The Orin Swift website describes “I” as “a vibrant wine that captures the spirit of Italy with a touch of new world bravado.” Come enjoy this new wine, located on our Orin Swift rack, for $18.99. A Simpler Approach to Wine…

is an advice column, of sorts, by James Laube, senior editor of Wine Spectator appearing in their May 31 edition. Laube points out that as wine consumers we are living in an embarrassment of riches- the world is awash in great juice from various regions and varietals! This, in itself though, is a double edged sword as all the options can be overwhelming. We found this article to be indicative of our mission at the Wine Merchant; to de-mystify the wine drinking experience. Laube offers 5 points for all wine drinkers, novice or sophisticated, to ponder as they drink their way around the world of wine. (more…)
